Original pen & ink 9" x 7"
The Winter Solstice takes place on or around December 21st.It marks the longest and darkest night of the year. This is a celebration of light and a rebirth of the Sun. From this day forward the light starts to get stronger little by little.
Rituals carried out in ancient celebrations involved lighting huge bonfires to encourage the Sun to return to warm the cold earth once more, bringing it back to life.

This piece was drawn at the Botanic Gardens on the Winter Solstice.
I have some of my prints available at the Gardens and I was asked if
I could do some drawings without any fairies! So this is what happened.
I used this flame orange colour for the background to represent the
return of the sun with warmth and light for the earth.
