Below is the current story for this piece but I will be rewriting it soon so that it works more as Spring Equinox piece about balance.
It's Spring-time and these blue-tits are flying in to receive a protection blessing for the new nests they are about to build. This is a ritual they carry out every year after they have found the perfect nesting site.
They arrive excitedly and wait patiently among the leaves until it is their turn to hop into a small bower. Here they are guided by a nature spirit who asks them to select a single leaf. Once they have picked a leaf they move on to meet a second nature spirit who provides them with the blessing.
When their chosen leaf has been infused with protection the blue-tits carry it back to their nesting-site. It will be used as a foundation for their nest which will be made with leaves and moss. The nest will then be lined with soft feathers, spider webs, fur or wool. Weaving this leaf into their nest ensures that their home will remain safe from harm during the nesting season.

I drew this piece on the cliff walk at Red Rock in Sutton towards the end of March. It was around the time of the Spring Equinox. At this time of year you can really feel the energy and the excitement of Spring. The days are getting longer, the light is getting brighter and there is a general sense of busyness in nature. I notice the birds foraging busily for nesting materials – the tiny ones always look especially frantic. These tiny birds always amaze me, especially with their nest building skills. If you have ever come across a fallen nest I am sure you have been amazed by the artistry and craftmanship of these beak-woven creations. They are truly astonishing.
