Dear Spring,

I am so glad that you are finally here. I feel so much better. I just wanted to say thank you.. .. thank you for your beautiful light in the mornings; thank you for your longer, brighter evenings. Everything is waking up now and I feel as though I am waking up too.

All around me there are luminous green shoots of plants and buds unfurling. In the garden I hear bumble bees bumbling and I see hover-flies hovering. At Bull Island the ponds are heaving with frogspawn and the skylarks are soaring and singing their hearts out. All of the birds are nesting.

And this is just the beginning ...I know there is so much more to come.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You fill my heart with so much joy and magic after a dark and cold Winter.

I drew this piece on the cliff walk at Red Rock in Sutton towards the end of March. It was around the time of the Spring Equinox. At this time of year you can really feel the energy and the excitement of Spring. The days are getting longer, the light is getting brighter and there is a general sense of busyness in nature. I notice the birds foraging excitedly for nesting materials – the tiny ones always look especially frantic. These small birds always amaze me, especially with their nest building skills. If you have ever come across a fallen nest I am sure you have been amazed by the artistry and craftmanship of these beak-woven creations. They are truly astonishing.
