I drew this piece during the Summer at Seefin passage tomb in Co. Wicklow. This is an ancient passage tomb located on the top of Seefin mountain. It is dated to around 3,000 B.C.
Over the years having visited many sacred places around Ireland, as well as reading Irish folktales and stories from mythology, I learned about different traditions and rituals associated with the land. So when I arrived at the top of Seefin I walked three times deiseal (sun-wise) around the cairn. I sat for a while opposite the cairn soaking up the surroundings and the beautiful peace and quiet of the place. I left a small offering of dried flowers (without seeds) under a stone. After a while I started my new drawing.
These are small rituals I use as a way to introduce myself to a place. This practice that I started with my outdoor drawings many years ago has now extended to my daily walks when I visit some of my favourite nature places. Sometimes I bring a small offering such as nuts, feathers or a few herb leaves. It's a little gift on my part, a conversation with nature, a thank you for everything nature gives to me.
