The elder tree is known to be inhabited by a spirit that protects it from harm. This is why it is always a good idea to ask the elder permission before cutting it (or any tree for that matter). It also has associations with witches and faery. Due to its appearance the elder tree is sometimes thought to be a witch in disguise. When the wind blows through it, it is said to be the faeries riding on its branches.  If the tree is cut the faeries will grieve for the tree and leave it for good - another reason to always ask permission from the elder tree before cutting it - or risk the wrath of both witch and faery……
