"I bow to the moon" was inspired by a very early morning walk in the park to listen to the dawn chorus back in June. I got back home from my wander at about 7am and it was one of those really beautiful hazy summer mornings. I was sitting out in the back garden and just felt like starting a new drawing - this was what emerged. The initial title in my mind was " I bow to nature in the morning sun" so the painting started with really bright colours. But for some reason over the course of the next few weeks I just couldn't get it to work. It wasn't until I let go of the title and listened to what it wanted to be that I felt like I made some progress. This meant layering the whole background with undiluted dark blue ink several times which was terrifying! - it took me 7 days of 2 hour stints to get the blue background to work properly - I felt like I had ruined it on several occasions but eventually it worked - and then of course the moon appeared - the moon is nearly always a feature in my paintings - so i think that until I allowed the moon to take its usual place in my painting it just refused to work! I need to listen more carefully in future...
