The Year of the Dragon occurs every twelve years and is considered to be a very powerful year (2012 was a dragon year). In ancient days the Chinese Dragon was regarded as sacred and it was worshipped as the divine ruler of lakes, rivers and seas. Everything associated with the dragon was blessed. The dragon symbolizes prosperity, success, boldness, perseverance, nobility and divinity. Dragon is energetic, decisive, optimistic, intelligent and ambitious. It can help us to overcome obstacles more easily by seeing each difficult situation as a challenge rather than an obstacle.

In 2012 the Chinese new year was being celebrated in Dublin as the year of the Dragon. I went to see the "Dragon Dance" at meeting house square. It was incredible. The dragon creature was so fluid, fierce and full of energy. I drew this piece by the sea the next day and discovered
afterwards that the 2012 dragon was a water dragon.
