We are made of star stuff
“Some part of our being knows
this is where we came from.
We long to return and we can,
because the cosmos is also within us.
We are made of star stuff.
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself”

I started drawing this piece back in April 2021 at Bull Island nature reserve. In Ireland we had just come out of a very strict 5km lockdown since December 2020. On the day that the restriction lifted I spent a few hours walking along the sea cliffs from the Martello Tower at Red Rock in Sutton out to Howth village and then back again – and it felt so good to be able to do this. The following day I found a spot in the grassland dunes at Bull Island and I started drawing "We are made of star stuff". Initially the title that popped into my mind for this drawing was “Ceiliuradh” or celebration. At the time it felt like a celebration of how good it felt to be able to wander somewhere in nature again beyond the 5km restriction. But eventually a new title appeared after I started watching "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan and "star stuff" felt like the right title for it...
