Brave new beginnings (SOLD)
Every year in Spring I wait for the frogspawn to appear in the freshwater ponds at Bull island nature reserve. I am so thrilled when I come across the very first clumps in the water, some large, some small, some scattered. Over the coming weeks and months I watch how they grow and change. Some clumps get disturbed, some clumps get eaten and for those that remain I am always hopeful.
Whatever stage they are at I always see how vulnerable they are. Exposed in their tiny ponds they face challenges like predation and other disturbances. I wonder will they have enough water to ensure they can transform in time?
But when I sit and watch them I am drawn in by their being and peacefulness. They’re not worrying about what might happen. They are content to simply be – either as a tiny black dot in jelly floating in a pool of water or a happy tadpole feeding, hiding and swimming freely in its pond. Watching them makes my heart smile. They are so alive and attuned with what is.
I wonder if I can carry this feeling of peacefulness back home and include it in my own world. A small piece of spaciousness, a small piece of flow, a feeling of simply being - attuned to how things are, not pushing against how things might be. And I thank these tiny creatures for what I learn from them and hope I can be as brave in my world as they always are in theirs.
