The Hesperides were minor goddesses who guarded the golden apples of immortality in Hera’s sacred garden. Hera received the golden apple tree as a wedding gift from Mother Earth on the day she was wed to Zeus.
The Hesperides were Hespera, Aegle and Erytheis. They were reputed to be the most fair and beautiful of all the young goddesses. They tended the garden with devotion and each had their own specific role in the garden. Hespera, (whose name means “light of evening”) was in charge of watering the sacred apple tree. Aegle (her name referring to the light, radiance and glory of the sunrise) polished the golden apples until they shone with heavenly light. Erytheis, (known as “The Red One” in reference to the sunset) took care of pruning and tending the sacred apple tree. Occasionally the Hesperides plucked the golden apples for themselves. Not trusting them, Hera placed a serpent in the garden named Ladon as further protection for her sacred tree.
